Thanksgiving Tree

Here is our Thanksgiving Tree.  We've never had a Thanksgiving tree before but I found the idea from here: A Holy Experience.  There is a free printable for the leaves and instructions on how to use the tree.  So, today my son collected the sticks and helped cut out the leaves.  Each leaf has a verse of Thanksgiving on it. We each picked out a leaf and then on the back of the leaf we wrote one thing we were thankful for then hung it on the tree.  We'll do this everyday until Thanksgiving.  I think it's a great tradition to start at our house!

Planning Ahead

It seems that I have forgotten that I have this little blog.  It's summer and we've been to the beach twice and the pool a lot, so that's my excuse for not blogging!

School started back for most of our state today but I don't start back for 3 more weeks! yay! just a little more summer fun to be had! So, I decided to plan ahead today for the coming year. I found this great link on Pinterest last night: 4 Weeks to Fill Your Freezer.  I started with waffles.  I also made pigs in a blanket using some leftover hot dogs we had in the freezer and I made the "blanket" from the pizza dough recipe found in the link above. From there, I made the energy bites (with just a few little changes based on what I had in the pantry). I also made a pot of vegetable soup for lunch this week.  Oh, and I forgot about the homemade "Uncrustables" I made and put in the freezer.

If that wasn't enough, I've also been hanging and tagging clothes for an upcoming consignment sale.  But now, it's nap time at our house and I've got an episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey on the DVR waiting to be watched!

Bedroom Completed!

It took me longer than a day, but I finally finished organizing my son's room.  Here's what it looks like now:

Much, much better! I cleaned out and threw things away and took half of his dress up clothes to my classroom.  The shelf with the different colored bins was given to me by a friend. Yay for free stuff! I also picked some shelving at a thrift store:

The shelves were a great deal. The three little ones were .99 a piece and the brown shelf was $7.99 with 30% off! Can't beat that.  I also got a shoe organizer to organize little odds and ends and I got a couple of drawstring laundry bags to store dress up clothes, sports equipment and all the toy weapons my son has.

It's done! My son is out of town until Sunday, so I know it will stay clean and organized until then. Oh, I forgot one thing.  I don't have a picture, but I put the books from the book shelf into storage bins and put the bins on the book shelf.  I loathe the book shelf, so we'll see if this helps with mess.  My next project is my daughter's room:

Today's Project

Today I am going to tackle my almost 4 year old's room. It is a disaster. Not quite sure what my plan is yet, but something has to be done. He's in San Diego with his grandmama for the next week, so we'll see what I can get done. I am also going to only spend $15 (or less) on the project.  I got a reimbursement check this week for a workshop I'm required to go to so that money is getting designated for this project.  Any storage ideas are welcome!

Busy Bags- Completed

The busy bags are completed; for now anyway. I may make some more throughout the summer, but this is a start. There are some really cute ideas for bags on Pinterest, but I really wanted to try and make some without spending any money. Mission accomplished! Here's what's in our busy bags:

1. Cars
2. Markers and notebooks
3. Dinosaurs
4. Stickers and sticker book
5. Animals
6. Toy Story characters
7. Books

All the bags are in a shopping bag. Now I just have to remember to put the shopping bag in the car when we go somewhere! I'll let you know if the busy bags actually keep my children entertained for any length of time!

Busy Bags

Hey! I'm back!  I sort of forgot I had a blog for a bit.  I remembered yesterday that I had one and I needed to update it.

This week I'm tidying up the kids' rooms.  I also just decided to make some busy bags.  If you don't know what a busy bag is, here is the general idea.  A busy bag is a small ziploc bag filled with self-contained activities.  I was on Pinterest looking for some ideas and it hit me.  Use toys, books, games, etc. that we already have to create busy bags.  I don't have to spend any money and I remove some of the stuff from the kids' rooms while I'm at it.  I'll post some pictures of how they turned out once I get them finished.

Kitchen Organization

I moved the pots and pans to where the plastic storage used to be. Now there are no more pots and pans all over the kitchen floor.  I still need to install a towel bar on the inside of the door for the lids.
I put all the kids plates and bowls here where they were easily accessible.  Now the kids can start emptying their own things from the dishwasher!

I pulled all the plastic containers out and matched lids and containers.  If it didn't have a lid it got thrown away.  If it was cracked or broken it got thrown away.  Hopefully this will bring a little order to the kitchen!

Today's project

While the kids are playing on the slip n slide, I'm going to tackle the tupperware cabinet.

Cookbook Collection After...

It really didn't take long to get all this put back together. I did look through everything and threw some stuff away. Looks much better; maybe it will help me get back to menu planning. I've really slacked off in that area. Life is much easier when I menu plan!

Cookbook Collection...Before

Today I'm going to try and get my cookbooks and printed recipes under control. I've got random papers with recipes all over the place. Funny thing is I usually don't even use recipes!

Gone!

I finally got all the laundry that has been on the love seat for weeks put away. It hasn't been the same laundry, that's just been as far as the clean laundry has made it. Now everything is in it's home. I read the other day that if you do one load of laundry a day, no matter how small, it's easy to stay on top of it. I'm going to try that and see if it works.

Taking Inventory

When is the last time you cleaned out your freezer and took inventory of everything in it?  I think the last time I did was about a year ago.  A couple of days ago I discovered my freezer held enough food for us to probably eat for probably a month without having to go to the grocery store (except for produce and milk)!  I still need to tackle the pantry and see what it holds.  You should take a freezer/pantry challenge sometime.  It will save you money and the time and hassle of having to go to the grocery store!

Clean Fridge!

I got the fridge cleaned out. Now to keep up with it and keep it organized all summer! I probably should've taken a before picture but I didn't. You'll just have to imagine how bad it was. Next up is the freezer. The goal in all of this is to not have to go to the grocery store for the next couple of weeks, except to buy milk.

Summer is here!

I am on summer vacation.  That means I have a lot of free time to work around the house.  My first order of business is getting the fridge, freezer and pantry organized.  My goal is to only cook what we have in the house for the next couple of weeks.  I'm sure there will be some interesting meals cooked!

On a side note, I'm watching Sister Wives.  It is just bizarre.

Shoes

I've decided to try and blog at least one thing that I've organized each day. I'm figuring if I do something once a day then by the end of the summer I will have the perfect house. Ha! I'm sure that will happen! Today I finally put my winter shoes up and put all my sandals in the shoe organizer. It does make it a little easier to walk in my walk-in closet.

Order? What is that?

Right now chaos is winning. I'm finishing up the school year and there is no sense of order in our home. The laundry is piled up. It's clean, but I can't seem to get it put away. There are toys and stuff everywhere. Ugghh! It's enough to make anyone crazy. But, in the midst of it all my kids are healthy and happy. I have an amazing husband. I am taking time to take care of me and I've lost about 11 pounds in the process. Here's to the summer and getting some sort of order back.

Still Trying to Create Order

I just can't seem to keep up with this blogging stuff on a regular basis.  And it seems that disorder seems to be slowly creeping back into my world.  For me, I have to remind myself of the little things that help to create a home that's more of order instead of disorder.  For example, we have what seems like 50 foot ceilings in our living room.  They're not really 50 feet, but when a light bulb blows, you wait until all three have blown out before getting out the 12 foot ladder to change them! All three bulbs had been out for about a week, so yesterday was the day to finally change them.  And while, you're changing the light bulbs you might as well clean all the dust and grime from the ceiling fan.  There's just something about having a clean ceiling fan that brings a sigh of relief. Like I said, it's the little things sometimes that help create some sense of order!

Another example, it's consignment sale season.  I spent most of this week going through the kids clothes, hanging and tagging items.  It's not the most fun thing (it's way more fun to shop!) but I did get 100 or so items out of the house.  Spring Break is in a couple of weeks and we are staying home, so I have two plans.  One is to potty train my almost 2 year old and the second is to do some major spring cleaning.  I'll check back in and let you know how if I succeed!

In the meantime, here's what we're eating this week:
Monday- Pioneer Woman's  Pork Chops with Pineapple Fried Rice (this is a new recipe, so we'll see how it goes over, especially since the hubby doesn't like pineapple)
Tuesday- Chili
Wednesday- dinner at church
The meals for the rest of the week haven't been decided on yet!

Healhy Lunch!

I try to feed our family relatively healthy meals 80% of the time. Saturday mornings are not healthy mornings (the hubby goes to Jack's and picks up breakfast for us) so I always try to have a healthy lunch. Today I made up an asian turkey lettuce wrap. And in the words of my 3 year old, "it's delicious".

African Chicken Recipe

I will start off this post with a quote from my 3 year old. He said "mom this is so good". African Chicken was such a hit tonight I thought I would share the recipe.  I can't find my copy of the recipe, so I had to just remember it the best I could.  And I need to give credit to Patsy, who first gave me this recipe.  I have loved this dish since the very first time i tried it.

Ingredients:

Cooked chicken, chopped (about 2 cups, you can always use more or less if you want)
1/2 diced onion
1 Tbs curry paste (or 1/4 tsp curry powder) I've used both, just depending on what I have on hand.  You can always use more or less curry depending on personal taste.
2 Tbs butter
2 Tbs flour
2 cups milk (I'm really just guessing on the milk, since I didn't measure it tonight.  I just poured until I thought it looked like enough)

Begin by sauteing the onion in a little bit of olive oil on medium high heat.  Next add the curry paste and the butter. (If you're using curry powder wait and add it when you add the milk). Once the butter melts, add the flour and whisk it for about 30 seconds or so.  Gradually add in the milk and whisk it all together.  Lower the heat to medium and let the sauce come to a gentle boil and thicken, stirring frequently.  Once the sauce starts to thicken add the chicken.  And it's done.  So simple!  If you want the sauce to be a little thinner you can add a little chicken stock to thin it out a bit.  The fun part is all the toppings you can put on it.

Toppings:
Basically, anything!  Tonight we had almonds and diced clementines.  Other toppings you can use: pineapple, mandarin oranges, peanuts, green onions, sour cream, coconut, diced red pepper...like I said anything! It may sound weird to put fruit on top of it, but it really is good.  I was skeptical when I first tried it, but as soon as I tried it I was sold.

Oh, almost forgot...serve over rice.  Tonight I served it over orzo pasta.  I like it better over rice, but since brown rice takes about 45 minutes to cook...I settled for the quick cooking orzo tonight!

Menu Plan: Week of Jan. 16

Since it's MLK Day I've got the day off. I've been a busy little bee so far today. I cooked a turkey for sandwiches this week and a couple of other meals we'll be having. MONEY SAVING TIP: Did you know buying and cooking a whole turkey saves you a lot of money? Turkey breast at the deli counter will cost you around $8.99/lb. A pound of turkey meat will last about 2 days at our house! Over the holidays I bought a 14lb turkey while it was on sale for $1.79/lb. Saving lots of money this way and getting several meals from it!

Back to having the day off...I got some long over due cleaning done, some laundry and I'm making stock out of the turkey bones. I did manage to put together a menu plan for the week, too.

Here's what we're eating this week.

Monday- Baked sweet and sour chicken with oatmeal stir fry
Recipe can be found here: Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken  and here Healthy Oat Stir Fry

Tuesday- African Chicken (this recipe I got from a friend many years ago and it's just stored in my head)

Wednesday- dinner at church

Thursday- Leftovers

Friday- dinner out somewhere since I don't cook on Fridays!

Saturday- Cilantro Soup with Turkey Quesadilla's

Sunday- Leftovers

Sunday, January 8, 2012

Menu Plan: Week of Jan. 9

Monday- Chicken Milanese with asparagus and spaghetti.

Tuesday- Crock Pot Venison Roast

Wednesday- dinner at church

Thursday- Leftover night

Friday- Dinner out somewhere

Saturday- Black Bean and Pepper Soup; I think I'll try this new recipe! I have a ham bone in the freezer and it's supposed to be cold so this should be good.

Breakfast in our house is usually cereal or oatmeal, but I'm thinking I may boil some eggs for the week and have eggs and toast, too.

Lunch for the week is turkey sandwiches.

New Year, New Starts

Two new ideas that we are going to start in our home this year.  The first is a weekly prayer time at dinner.  I got this idea at the Holiday Extravaganza at our church.  Several ladies talked about Christmas traditions they have in their own families.  One of those was not throwing away Christmas cards.  We now have a basket that holds all of this years Christmas cards.  Every Monday at the dinner table we will pull out a card and pray for that family.  So, if you sent us a Christmas card you will be prayed for over the course of the next year.

The second idea is a basket of verses.  During the Christmas season we had an advent calendar.  Each night we would open a flap and read a bible verse.  Will loved doing this every night.  I spent yesterday looking online for something similar that we could do every night before bedtime.  My friend Kezia suggested making a jar with verses and letting the kids pull out a verse each night for us to read.  Such a simple idea, why didn't I think of it?!  So, here's our new verse basket and how you can make on too.

I went to Pinterest and found some bible verse cards that I could print out.  I love when other people do all the work and I can just copy it!

I cut the cards apart.

Then put them in this basket.  The basket was 75% off at Michael's after Christmas sale.  If you turn the basket around you'll find that the fabric says Happy Holidays, so when Christmas comes around again I'll just turn the basket around!  I love a good deal!

This is a super easy project to start off the new year.

New Year, New Post

I haven't blogged in a couple of months.  Life just got crazy busy.  It's a new year and I hope to blog at least once a week.  I'm working on a project today that I'll be back later to tell you about.  And if all goes as planned today I will have Christmas decorations put away and a menu plan done.  But we'll see, because usually in our household nothing goes as planned!
